Content Ratings

***DISCLAIMER***

What people view as appropriate/inappropriate varies greatly from person to person. Therefore, adult individuals are invited to use their own judgment about which (if any) of these books may be appropriate for them. And parents are likewise invited and encouraged to use their own judgment in choosing at what age their children may first read any of these books.

That being said— Authoress, Kealohilani, hopes her own personal content ratings of her books might help adult individuals and parents make more informed decisions.

NOTE:

People from ages 8 to 90+ have read and enjoyed Kealohilani’s work. And, ALL of Kealohilani’s books are written within the basic Young Adult genre standards (meaning no explicit language, no nudity, almost no implied nudity, no explicit sex scenes, no overly-graphic violence, etcetera). But there are thematic elements that Kealohilani believes may affect at what age each reader may be ready to read these books.

The Half-Hearts Chronicles

Kealohilani recommends this series for children ages 8 and up if they are reading with older family members and 12 and up if they are reading the books on their own.

The content is generally equivalent with that of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hunger GamesDivergent, etcetera. So for a child who has already read any of those— there should be no real problem with The Half-Hearts Chronicles books.

There are some thematic and/or violent elements/scenes that deal with more mature issues, which are handled in a way that would generally fly over the heads of younger readers— but parental guidance is still advised.

The Romeo Killed Juliet Saga

Kealohilani recommends this series for children 16 and up. As it is a murder mystery, there is a certain amount of violence— and, as there is a romance at the center of the plot, there are also some scenes that deal with physical affection, etcetera (though there are NO explicit sex scenes).

Its content is generally equivalent to Young Adult books like The Hourglass Door Trilogy, Twilight, Divergent, etcetera. So if a child has read any of the books listed here— there should not be a problem with this saga. However, parental guidance is still advised.

I Don’t!: A Comedy Of Error

Kealohilani recommends this novella for ages 18 and up. Thematic elements, as well as irresponsible alcohol and drug use, make this otherwise very-clean story a little bit edgy.

Those who have seen movies or TV shows such as, What Happens In Vegas, Jane the Virgin, Frasier, and the like, are probably going to be fine with this story (as it is probably objectively cleaner in its execution than any of those shows in general, but still has similar thematic elements). Regardless, if a parent is allowing a younger reader to read this book— parental guidance is strongly advised. Kealohilani suggests that parents read the entire novella to make an informed decision.

ANOTHER NOTE:

All of Kealohilani’s recommendations aside— the movies based on these 11 books will ALL most likely be super-clean PG-13’s when they are made. So each book is a total judgment call.

***TRIGGER WARNING***

ALL of these books have elements that may trigger various people (even some adults). So again, please use good judgment.

If you feel triggered or morally offended by something you read in any of Kealohilani’s books— she respectfully requests that you please take a break, skip a few pages, or (if the reaction is extreme) stop reading the book altogether.
